Brady-Handy Collection (most 1860-1910)
This collection contains approx. 5,000 glass negatives ca. 1860-1875. Original glass plate negatives by Mathew Brady and Levin C. Handy studios; chiefly portraits of presidents, members of Congress, military and naval officers, justices of the Supreme Court, actors, artists, religious leaders, and other notables. Also includes views of Washington, D.C., and vicinity.
This collection contains approx. 7,000 photographs from the American Civil War era. This collection contains many portraits of generals, a lot of battlefield views (some carnage), photos of troops, etc.
This collection includes over 1,600 color photographs depicting the impact of the late part of the Great Depression through World War II. Many photos show rural life, migrant labor, and economic conditions. Other photos show the rapid industrialization and training for the war effort.
Panoramic Photographs (most 1880s-1920s)
This collection contains over 4000 images featuring American cityscapes, landscapes, and group portraits. These panoramas offer an overview of the nation, its enterprises and its interests, with a focus on the start of the twentieth century when the panoramic photo format was at the height of its popularity. The images date from 1851 to 1991 and depict scenes in all fifty states and the District of Columbia. More than twenty foreign countries and a few U.S. territories are also represented.
Photochrom Prints (1890-1905)
This collection contains over 6,000 views of Europe, the Middle East, and North America. Published primarily from the 1890s to 1910s, the richly colored images look like photographs but are actually ink-based photolithographs. Like postcards, the photochroms feature subjects that appeal to travelers, including landscapes, architecture, street scenes, and daily life and culture. The prints were sold as souvenirs and often collected in albums or framed for display.
This collection contains approx. 5500 images (approx. 700 of which are Currier & Ives). The prints in this collection span from political broadsides to carefully colored landscape paintings.
This collection contains approx. 2000 posters illustrating the wide range of popular, live entertainment in America from the late nineteenth to the early twentieth century. The posters represent the entire contents of three collections: the Magic Poster Collection, the Minstrel Poster Collection, and the Theatrical Poster Collection.
Posters: WPA Posters (most 1936-1943)
This collection contains over 900 posters produced from 1936 to 1943 by various branches of the WPA. The posters were designed to publicize exhibits, community activities, theatrical productions, and health and educational programs in seventeen states and the District of Columbia, with the strongest representation from California, Illinois, New York, Ohio, and Pennsylvania.
